HARRISBURG, PA — Pennsylvania Treasurer Joe Torsella announced the recent donation of approximately $25,000 worth of physical property held in the Bureau of Unclaimed Property vault to Central Pennsylvania non-profits. The donated items were turned over to the state as part of the Commonwealth’s unclaimed property program with no known rightful owner.
“In this season known for giving, we’re happy to help do our part to make a difference with these donations. Pennsylvania has a unique way of describing our sense of belonging and community—we call it a ‘Commonwealth.’ These important groups help shape our youngest minds, serve friends and neighbors who live with disabilities, support sick children and their families in their times of need, and protect animals from harm. We’re proud to donate what we can, to help them better serve the community,” said Joe Torsella, Pennsylvania Treasurer.
Under Pennsylvania’s Unclaimed Property Law, Treasury has the ability to determine if donating physical property under the Bureau of Unclaimed Property’s care is more cost-effective than taking it to auction. This allows Treasury to make donations to organizations that can benefit greatly from their value.
Items donated included gift cards, tools, and electronics such as iPods, iPads, speakers, and calculators. These items have been held in the vault for several years and Treasury has no way of identifying the rightful owners.
Organizations who received donations include Leg Up Farm, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central PA, YWCA Greater Harrisburg, Caitlin’s Smiles, United Cerebral Palsy of Central PA, The Nativity School, Londonderry School, St. Stephen’s Episcopal School, Keystone Human Services/Susquehanna Service Dogs, and PAWS – Preservation of Animal Welfare & Safety.
